Craving greens :: houseplants & garden plans

The sunshine here yesterday was divine. Thanks to the break in the Midwestern gray and a slight spike on the thermometer, I’m having pipe dreams about an early spring.

In case that doesn’t work out, I’ll at least have these three cute new houseplants. Eight years after acquiring Simon, I can finally have houseplants—as the living room mantle in the new house is high enough that the mean house cat can’t jump on it for his own taste of green.

Anyone know what these are? I admit I chose them at Lowe’s on Friday night based entirely on color and variegation. (How do I know that word? I have never kept a houseplant alive longer than 6 weeks. My red-headed, garden-loving Scottish great-grandmother would be oh, so sad.)

But let’s say—just to cheer us—that our early spring came true.

It’d be so fun to grow herbs like this.

Succulents. So weird and so wonderful. I tried to grow some indoors in terrariums last summer but, for various reasons (including Simon’s appetite), they all died.

I’d like to think that I could have the restraint to do something this simple and elegant.

But I always end up giving in to my deep-seeded desire for—you guessed it—color, color, color. I’m a native Texan. When it comes to flowers (and, formerly, hair), I go big.

Here are a few links you might find useful as you prepare for the tulips to raise their leafy little arms up to the sky.

What are you thinking for your yards, gardens, and patios this year? Post a link or pin in the comments if you will. I’d love to know.
